Animating Subtitles was so bad we spent couple years figuring out this mess, and made After Effects Extension for it.

This UI includes multiple scripts that allow you: 

• upload .srt, .vtt and .sbv subtitles files directly into After Effects

• Combine words & phrases .srt file*  to import text layers with word-level timings

• Multiple tools to create and edit text boxes

• 5 animator presets to apply on the text layers with word-level markers for ultimate timing control (with or without duration)

*extension uses .json files to make sense of these 2 inputs.
